India-Bangladesh Trade Begun through Maia (West Bengal)-Sultanganj (Bangladesh) river ports
- On February 12, 2024, India and Bangladesh initiated the first experimental vessel passage between Maia Port in India and Sultanganj Port in Bangladesh. Indian Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shantanu Thakur has flagged off the first cargo ships bringing stones from Maia port.
- There are 16 kilometers of riverine separation between Sultanganj and Maia ports. Of these, 11.5 km of waterways are in Bangladesh and 4.5 km are in India. The trip from Maia to Dhubri is 930 kilometers shorter if it takes the Aricha route. The Indo Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) Routes Nos. 5 and 6 trial will aid in cutting down on travel time.
